Personal statement review, by program

Every committee reads for something different. Pick your track for what that committee weighs, what makes it skim, the length rules that actually apply, and sentence-level redlines — then run your draft through the three-reader committee read.

Grad school

Graduate committees are small, busy, and made of faculty who will personally supervise you. They are reading for a question you can actually pursue, evidence you can carry it, and a reason it has to be their department.

Law school

Law readers are testing whether you can reason on paper. The statement is a writing sample disguised as a narrative — every unsupported assertion is evidence against you.

Medical school

Med school readers work through a high volume of files describing similar shadowing hours. What separates a statement is one closely observed moment and honest reflection on what it changed.

MBA

MBA committees read for measurable impact and a real decision you found hard. Leadership language without numbers reads as consulting boilerplate — and they read boilerplate all day.

PhD

A PhD statement is a funding argument. Someone has to believe you will still be productive in year four, and that they want to be the person supervising it.

Nursing

Nursing programs read for clinical realism and staying power. They already know the work is hard; they want proof you know it too and are still coming.

Psychology

Psychology admissions is mentor-driven. One faculty member decides whether your statement makes their next five years easier or harder.

Dental school

Dental committees want evidence you understand a career of precise, repetitive, physical work — and that you chose it over medicine deliberately.
